Against Poetry

Against Poetry
—Alan Shapiro

Golden leaves,
Russet leaves
Detach, float, spin
By the thousands,
Singly.

Charged with meaning
By poets,
Used as metaphor
For decline, loss,
Separation,

The poets
Come between us
And the leaves
In their meaningless
Beauty.
